FIRST AND FOREMOST, I’VE BEEN A VERY ACTIVE MEMBER OF THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS FOR MANY YEARS, HAVING HELD MANY LOCAL LEAGUE POSITIONS AS WELL AS STATE BOARD POSITIONS IN VARIOUS STATES AROUND THE COUNTRY WHERE I LIVED. AS A BOARD MEMBER, ON A LOCAL OR A STATE MEMBER, ONE IS EXPECTED TO SUPPORT THE TENETS OF THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS BY MAINTAINING NON-PARTISANSHIP. AGAIN, IT IS HARD BUT I’VE BEEN ABLE TO MAINTAIN MY INDEPENDENCE FOR THESE YEARS. THERE WAS A PERIOD IN THE MID-2000’S WHEN I DID NOT SERVE ON ANY LOCAL OR STATE BOARDS AND I SUPPORTED CANDIDATES….I FIND IT IS MUCH MORE ‘FUN’ AND PRODUCTIVE TO SUPPORT THE RIGHT TO VOTE RATHER THAN A PARTICULAR CANDIDATE. THIS TIME OF YEAR, I AM EXTREMELY BUSY WITH CANDIDATES’ FORUMS AND DEBATES WHERE THE LEAGUE EITHER HOLDS OR SPONSORS. I ALSO AM PARTICIPATING IN A HEALTH CARE FORUM THIS WEEK INFORMING CITIZENS OF THE CHANGES IN THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT. MY ‘VOLUNTEER’ RESUME IS MUCH MORE SUPPORTIVE THAN MY ‘PAID’ RESUME IN MANY INSTANCES. FOR THOSE OF YOU READING THIS, PLEASE GO TO YOUTUBE AND WATCH THE LADY GAGA SUFFRAGETTE VIDEO THAT WAS COMMISSIONED FOR VOTER EDUCATION. I CLAP EACH TIME I WATCH IT!!! PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO VOTE NEXT TUESDAY AND REST ASSURED, I WILL REMIND YOU AGAIN….
I attended a Law and Employment seminar on Friday and was pleased that it was confirmed by the attorney presenters that my experiences with NFP’s and FP’s that ‘purposely’ engage in illegal and unethical activities is not normal….I was informed that it is more likely that a Board of Directors for a NFP and that owners of a small to medium size company that do not follow the letter of the law for operation of an enterprise are more likely doing so because they do not know any better than doing it because they have a disregard for the law or laws. I know that is not the case in the situations in a few of the organizations that I experienced, however, I contend that the operations of a business, whether for profit or not for profit are complicated in the least and I’m sure that within the first few years of operation, owners (for profits) and boards (not for profits) could possibly have a modicum of confusion. If there is any question as to whether a business practice is acceptable or not, please contact your local SCORE representative, an accountant or an attorney or contact me via email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or phone (484-798-1236) and I will gladly place you in the direction of compliance.
Normally, I am a big movie buff but in the past few months due to work load, League load or volunteer load, I’ve missed a number of the ‘better’ movies. The past few weekends, I’ve attempted to ‘catch up’ ….I’m generally geared to movies about my two (2) passions….my work (helping people find work and helping companies treat good employees ‘well’) and my avocation (anything related to food)….a movie that I chose over the weekend is titled
“A Thousand Times Good Night”…the movie stars Juliet Binoche and Nikolaj Coster-Walda (affectionately known as Jamie Lannister in the HBO series, Game of Thrones)…it is about a female war photographer (Binoche) who, at the outset of the movie, is photographing a young muslim girl being strapped for a suicide bombing….I will not give away any more of the story, however, it was a great reminder as to the passion that some individuals have for their work…in some instances (as some good Health Care professionals will confirm) and that the desire to help other individuals or to make a difference in the world in some way overcomes many other factors in one’s life….if you have any type of passion for your work or if you want to see some wonderful acting by one of the best, then please watch “A Thousand Times Good Night’…it is not for the faint hearted….it will impact you….I promise.
By virtue of a few of the individuals that I’ve met in the past six months, I have the opportunity to bid on another RFP….I won my first RFP….my last experience with anything to do with an RFP was learning that a former employer had falsified information on a RFP to a major insurer….I had never done an RFP. I was scared but with encouragement from friends and business associates, I completed it….was given ideas by more experienced individuals as to how to make SCB Services, LLC stand out…and I was awarded the contract. I’m approaching this next RFP with such positivity….I may not be awarded the contract but having done one, I have the confidence that at least my presentation will be acceptable and the experience that I’ve already garnered having worked under a contract has been valuable. Wish me luck!!! If anyone needs help with an RFP, please feel free to contact me. I was given a secret…
Back to work for the next few days with lots of volunteering this week….with the help of friends, I’m cooking 20 quarts of soup for the local soup kitchen tomorrow….presenting in a Health Care Forum as to the history of the Affordable Care Act…attending a League sponsored Candidates’ Debate this week and much more….Please remember to vote next Tuesday….many people suffered much to give us this right….and watch that Video!
