According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Maria Fernandes was one of 7.5 million people in the United States that work multiple jobs as a result of losing their jobs during the 2008 recession. Many of those that lost their job during the recession have taken a 10% cut in wages to return to the work force.
It is rumored that the 32 year old Ms. Fernandes was working four part time positions as a result of losing her primary job during the 2008 recession. She was reportedly sleeping in her car in a rest area between Dunkin Donuts’ shifts and died of carbon monoxide poisoning. What an absolutely tragic accident for this to occur to this beautiful young woman. My heart goes out to her family.
I do not want to denigrate this young worker by continuing a diatribe regarding corporate profits and minimum wage. I will wait for another day. Let all of us think about what it takes to push through a day of work….and for those of us that are gainfully employed in some area, let us say a Thank You to Maria Fernandes for her contribution to the American economy, no matter how small.
