I want to tell a story of an amazing woman; a story of Perseverance and Passion. My daughter applied to the Naval JAG Corps in the fall of her 3L year of law school. She decided to enter the Navy for a number of reasons, the primary being her relationship as Mentee of the Interim Dean of the Penn State/Dickinson School of Law, who was the former head JAG Officer in the US Navy, a three (3) star Admiral. She was not accepted with that initial application. However, she had learned to ‘love’ the Navy and the members of the Naval JAG Corps that she had met up to that point in time. She decided to apply again in early 2014 (she had heard that the Navy looks for perseverance). Her father and I gave her our support (we don’t often agree!) as long as she applied for other positions as well.
She received three (3) job offers within a 48 hour period last April…when some lawyers are still looking. One of the offers was her dream of the Professional Recommendation for the US Naval JAG Corps. She turned down the other two (2) offers and accepted the JAG offer. There is a catch here…just because one is ‘professionally recommended’ for the JAG Corps, does not mean one automatically gets into the Navy….
Passion for your work; doing what you want to do….those of us that are fortunate to be in the situation of doing what we want …it is priceless…money cannot ‘buy’ the feeling one gets from waking up each morning and looking forward to one’s day with vigor and vim…I love what I do now….it took me a long time to get here….it is funny…over the years….the jobs that I liked the best were those where I worked for unsavory employers...and if you have been following this BLOG at all, you know that I have worked for a few ‘unethical’ employers…
I am envious of my daughter…she asked me where she should ‘go’ on her first posting…she gets to itemize her priorities and there are about 15 different locations…she can ‘choose’ six…and, of course, the US Navy decides….however, preferences are considered seriously. Large base/small base….east coast/west coast….International….Japan/Italy are choices….since I was such a ‘wonder lust’ at her age, I told her it had to be her choice…she was concerned about being so far away from me and Oscar…and her extended family, especially her grandmother, who turns 90 years young this year. NO, I said…go wherever….fly and soar…I will be fine and we will see each other as often as we need to see each other…her grandmother will be happy enough ‘bragging’ about her….I want her to experience all that she can…and I’m so very glad that she will not sitting in a Prosecutors’ Office in some dark County building stating ‘let’s get the ‘bad’ guys’…she will be doing her best to help those that have the class and dignity to represent this country. She will be doing her best for the men and women that represent this country in all circumstances...she will be helping the Wounded Warriors of this country in whatever way she can…I can’t wait to make my first visit to my daughter wherever she is posted. Did I say that I’m proud of her?
….and, yes, she is proud of her mother….she has a mother that stands up for her convictions through good and bad….someone who fights for her beliefs and defends the ‘underdog’….and loses more often than wins…but doesn’t give up….something like the Democrats in Congress right now….oh well…we will get there again….and, she does think her mom is a bit ‘crazy’…for I am….not the ‘colored paper clip’ crazy or the ‘my main objective is to make everyone believe everything that comes out of my mouth’ crazy nor the ‘let’s see how much we can blame someone else so that we don’t look so bad’ type of crazy….but, I am a Robin Hood sort of crazy…always thinking that I can better society or I can ‘reprimand’ the ‘ingrates’ of the world in my own way…only to learn time and time again that I cannot….I always get myself in trouble…and those ‘ingrates’ seem to get away with whatever they are doing that makes them 'ingrates'…alas, my lot in life…at least what negative Karma I’ve experienced is isolated….and I did an amazing ‘job’ of raising a contributing member of society…as anyone who has had the privilege to meet my daughter will agree.
Perseverance and Passion….both intertwined…do your best and be your best…and please be truthful for as anyone will tell you, it will come back and bite you in the butt if you are not; someday, sometime and somewhere. If you have any questions about how to begin to find your ‘passion’, please feel free to contact Rosanne Bennett at firstname.lastname@example.org or at 484-798-1236. I look forward to hearing from you!!!
Happy International Women's Day! Let's celebrate my daughter and all those women who will make a difference in the world and who will some day insure that the Boko Harams' and the ISIS' of the world no longer exist...
